BIM: The Missing Piece

I’m sure you’ve heard the term “Industry 4.0.” Similar monikers have been applied to other areas, EHS 4.0 for instance. I’d like to introduce a new term: Workplace 4.0. I’m not one to create hard definitions, but in my mind, many new standards fit into Workplace 4.0: Casual wear such as jeans & a Metallica t-shirt are usually ok for a meeting; children in the workplace are a fact; sometimes the dog barks on a call and we all just smile at the innocent disruption.

At the end of the day, the only constant in life is change

This was true last year, and nothing is truer in 2020. The next change many of us have on our mind is what reopening the world looks like and how that happens. We all know that things will never go back to how they were in the before times which is why we are posing a new idea:

2020 is the year of BIM and the workplace.

Regardless of the industry you are in, one thing is clear. Change is happening now, and will happen in the future. At this intersection of what it means to work, I pose the question: How are you planning for these changes to your workplace today, and how can you apply that to inevitable changes you will need to make in the future?

Your business is unique, as are the needs of your workers and customers. Retail faces a considerably different set of challenges than manufacturing. Today, industry aside, one thing is certain. Your workplace strategy has uncertainties. As a leader, you must be a visionary to successfully navigate the changing spatial needs of your employees. Understanding the true performance and impact your offices, storefronts, or production facilities have on your bottom line and overall company  performance is imperative.

How do I get started?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you have spatial standards for employee needs that are already clearly defined?

  • Where are they stored, and what systems can access that information and data?

  • Are your systems connected where needed, or are you storing that data in duplicate places? If so, is your data ecosystem rich?
